Merry Christmas from Roger

Female Figure Back View

Nice drawing, a mixture of charcoal and pastel.

Celine, Back View

This another fifteen minute pose. If you click on the image it should give you a larger view. This drawing was sold at my exhibition in Sydney, if anyone is interested in purchasing a drawing, they can be rolled up into a cylinder and sent anywhere in the world. The average price for my life drawings, remembering they are large format - around 1 metre in depth, $350. U.S. Just email me for details and I can send you jpegs of available drawings.

Male Figure

This is a charcoal and pastel drawing, I usually only use pastels. The likeness is fairly good considering this was only a 15 minute pose. This has been sold.

Last Thursday's Drawing

Here are three figures from my latest life drawing session. Each pose was five minutes. This picture has been sold.

Nest on Beige

This is another of my nest paintings. It is currently on display at Digipress, 12 King William Street Kent Town, South Australia. It's shown on a lovely charcoal grey wall, which seems to suit it very well and judging by the enquiries other people seem to agree.

New pastel drawing

I did this drawing last week at the art school,I attempt to get a really gutsy strong line, with some subtle areas to tempt the eye, all the smudges and searching lines are an added bonus! hope you like it, click on the image for a larger view, or click comments to give me your feedback.

This little oil sketch was made at last weeks life drawing session. It's painted on to oil sketch paper which I had prepared with a neutral colour background. It took about 20 minutes from start to finish.

Postage Stamp

I designed a Christmas stamp for Australia Post a long time ago and this year they have chosen five classic Australian Christmas stamps to reissue. I'm happy to say that my Santa on a surfboard was chosen along with the others. Australia was the first country in the world to do a special Christmas stamp issue and my design was the first cartoon to appear on an Australian stamp.

Grapes

Here is a recent oil on canvas that I painted for my exhibition in Sydney. I have a winery interested in acquiring it for their cellar door. I should know in the next week or two, meanwhile if you know of anyone in the wine industry get in touch with me through my email.

Birds Nest with turqoise egg.

(SOLD) This painting was completed for the exhibition, of all the nest paintings I have completed this one is probably the mostpowerful, and the one that has had the most praise, while at the exhibition, a stranger spoke to me and told me why I painted these nests,( spooky!.) according to him, the blackeness in the centre draws you in, and then once focussed, they have a mandala effect which helps with meditation? they also according to him have a spirituality, were they bring nature and art together, etc etc, fascinating!! I of course new all this before I painted them!

Still life with rusty mug

(SOLD) This is another new painting to be featured in the show in Sydney.

Apples in Plastic Bag

Here is another painting for my Sydney exhibition, which will be at the Mary Place Galllery in Paddington. It opens on Wednesday 3rd Oct from 6.00pm. Any bloggers that can make it - come and say G'day!! (And bring your cheque book!)
I'm having it in conjunction with Alex Lavroff, his paintings are huge in scale, featuring those suspended swimming pools you see in Sydney that over-hang the ocean. Amazing stuff. I'll try and put a link to his site on my blog soon.

Scattered Pears

This picture will be going in to either my up-coming exhibition in Sydney (I'll post details about it soon) or in to the Adelaide Cathedral art show.

Pumpkin and two lemons

(SOLD) This still-life was produced for the Florey Medical Research Centre. A number of artists are asked to produce a painting, all on the same sized canvas. They must not be signed, they are given a number and are sold for the one price of $250. The general public enjoy the excitement of trying to find the 'name' artists and hopefully triple their investment in one hit. It's a great fun night, with a lot of my friends participating.

still life with lemon and blue bowl.

this picture was painted at the same time as the one below,it's oil on canvas, the biggest challenge was to get the white enamelled bottle to look convincing, I love the little flecks of colour in the shadows, (John McCartin, a painter friend of mine says, that when your painting, you should look for colour, and squint for tone.) both these pictures will benefit from a coat of varnish.

Portrait - five steps

Some people have enquired about the process of making my pastel drawings. So, on Friday I took my camera and over the period of 45 mins took these step-by-step pictures. Hope it is of interest. The most important thing when drawing from life is to enjoy the act of creation.

This drawing of Kate has been sold.

Kate

These two pictures were painted on Friday. The oil sketch of Kate was produced in about 30mins. Its a fairly good likeness, and probably the time constraint stopped me from over-working it.
The other monochrome painting took probably an hour. The constraints of using only one colour, in this case burnt umber, gives a nice fresh appearance.

Here are two of the drawings from the Thursday night life class. I may post up a couple more later on. (I had what I thought was a productive night.)

Still Life

This is a little painting that I did about a year ago. It depicts various objects I pick up around the place. And, when arranged it subliminaly makes a face. (It does to me, anyway!!) Hope you like it - this one is available for sale. Just email me if you are interested. Its oil on canvas, in a small black frame and measures approximately 400mm x 400mm.

Illustration friday - your paradise

This is my submission for the subject 'your paradise.' If only it was that easy!!

Goolwa Road oil painting

I did this small painting a couple of months ago. My painting buddys were all facing the other direction, painting boats on the water but, me (being a maverick!) chose to paint this suburban road going off in the distance and changing to a dirt road.

still life with apple.

One new still life picture, oil on canvas, about 500x600mm the single apple may be pointing me to a more simple kind of arrangement, if I can get out of my office and up into the studio I'll try another spartan layout!!
