Yellow and Orange

I like the geometric shape of the pumpkin and the way it changes the colour of the lemon. The colour of a pumpkins skin is also fascinating being a grey-blue mix.

The Blue Feather

This is a new nest painting,I believe it's complete but I never think they are finished, I always want to add one more piece of detail. But I'm going to resist this time and leave it as it is.
The size is 1m x 1m, it has a pale blue background.

Golden Summer

Another still life. I was interested in making a picture work with a very limited colour palette, and also making the objects emerge out of a dark background, giving an air of mystery.

Some friends came over for dinner on Saturday night and brought with them a beautiful basket of lemons, from their trees, so I couldn't help myself, the next day,I needed to paint them, (with a mild hangover, I might add!! ) hope you enjoy the result, email me for any comments, as long as they are positive of course!!

Three objects on a shelf

I painted this little still life recently. I like the subtle blue colour that's emerging out the shadows. I'm going to take some photos of my studio and show how I set up my still life arrangement, on a precarious pyramid of chairs and tables to get them at the correct eye level.

Still life with egg plant

I completed this little painting over the weekend. It's 310 mm x 150 mm. What interested me most was the beautiful reflective surface of the eggplant.

Two new drawings from life class

I went back to drawing last night after a couple of weeks break. It was a smaller class than usual, maybe it's getting close to Christmas, putting pressure on peoples spare time? Or has the global melt down hit the artistic fraternity!!! We almost had more models than students!

Orbiter

A new and beautiful nest painting, just completed. This one will be appearing in the next edition of the Australian Art Collector magazine. A primitive space ship, traveling in space and holding within itself an embryonic life force.

This is a commissioned piece from a client that loved a similar painting that was sold earlier this year. So I changed the proportions to suit their needs, I am particularly proud of this painting and will miss it when it leaves the studio.

Greetings Cards - 1st edition sold out.

This image shows you the format for the greetings cards, folded in the middle and blank inside. They measure 120 mm x 145 mm (folded). They are printed on a nice quality card and come in a set of 4, in a cellophane wrap. They show 4 of the most popular nest paintings, and judging by the reaction of those who have already snapped them up - are a real collectable. If anyone is interested they are $10 AU a pack. (Cheques or money orders only) I will even personally sign them on request. Eye of the Storm

We had a really successful day with our first Australian Open Garden. We had reasonable weather on Saturday, a little overcast, but Sunday was absolutely perfect! Over 200 visitors with so much positive feedback about the garden, the sculpture and the paintings in the studio. I was on my feet from 6.30 am until the last visitors left at 5.00 pm. My nest series greetings cards sold like hot cakes! We added four envelopes and tied them with raffia, and then put them in a lovely wicker basket - they looked beautiful.

Still life with ginger jar

I painted this little still life with a tomato, ginger jar and orange slice over the weekend. On top of distributing to tons of rubble over our garden paths, getting things ship-shape for the upcoming Australian Open Garden Scheme. I'm hoping the weather will be kind to us! And that I get a lot of visitors into the studio.

Nest for the Florey

The annual Florey exhibition is upon us again! This is the exhibition that raises funds for cancer research. The artists do a painting on a set canvas size, no one signs their work on the front, each painting is sold for $250 and it's a great opportunity for the local artists to get together, have a chat, check out each others work and get a little merry at the same time! Last year I did the painting with the pumpkin and lemon which can be seen on an earlier post of this blog.

Vortex

This nest painting is fairly large scale, 120 cm x 120 cm. (It fits into my RAV, only just!)
I may enter this into the annual Balmain Art show in Sydney this November. i love the background splatter effect, and the colour of the nest works very well against the neutral grey background. It's a powerful image and if and when it sells I will miss it!
Update: Nov 11th
This painting went on display at the annual Balmain Art Show in Sydney last weekend, and apparently there were three collectors almost fighting over it and the winner has a wonderful three story home overlooking the harbor so it will be much admired.

Spinner

I have changed the contents of this nest a couple of times. It started with two dead chicks' skeletons, which were found in this nest during the hot summer. Friends told me it would be hard to sell with such a sad story, so I replaced them with three eggs. This picture will go into the annual Cathedral Art show next month, here in Adelaide.

I will be doing a lot of these little still life paintings over the next few weeks, as we will have the house and studio open to the public as part of the Soth Australian Open Garden Scheme, on September 20th and 21st, I hope to have at least 20 small paintings that I can offer at a bargain price, when the visitors turn up, hopefully gardeners are avid art lovers ? I will let you know.

Stop and Go

This little still life was completed over the weekend. I have a couple more that need some tweaking and I should be able to post them up over the next few days, I'm off to Perth for a week from 31st, back on the 7th August. I'm going to check out some options in WA.

Amy

This is a drawing from last night's session. The model is Amy, who is a delight to draw having such good bone structure and classic features. I used an old sheet of blue paper which gives lovely middle tones. And, the result is quite pleasing, although I have probably spent five more minutes than I should have.

This painting was completed some years ago and it was purchased by a private collector. It's about 700 mm wide.

my 1st nest painting

this painting was completed in 2004, and was sold within a few days to a couple of great friends of ours, it's 120 x 120 cm, fairly large and looks just beautiful in this sensational room, I hadn't seen it for some years so looking at it with fresh eyes, was a real treat.

Jeziah

Eucalyptus 1

This painting was completed last year, it's a beautiful tree growing in some scrub close to my studio. It was a wet morning which seemed to emphasise all the colours well. This picture is around a metre deep by 75 cm wide.

This was a drawing done at last weeks, life session, when I
1st saw this pose, I thought it would be so boring to draw, but once into it, I enjoyed it, and I'm happy with the result,

What more can I say?!

New still Life.

I spent some tme in the studio at the weekend, and produced a few small still-life paintings. I love the proportion of these little canvases and still life being my favourite subject - I just can't help myself! Which takes dedication considering the terrible heat we are exeriencing in Adelaide. (a national record for a heat wave 15 days in a row over 35 degrees Celcius). Can't wait for winter!

This is my most recent nest painting and it's one that I feel is quite successful, especially the spontaneous and impressionist brush strokes.

This will go in a local art show in about 3 weeks time.
